Grammar notes

  • 有 (yǒu) — to have / there is

    有 expresses possession or existence. Subject + 有 + object. The negative is 没有, never 不有.

    我家有四个人。There are four people in my family.

  • A 是 B — A is B

    是 links two nouns (identity/category). It is NOT used before adjectives: say 她很高, not 她是高.

    爸爸是医生。Dad is a doctor.
