  1. Wang Fang gets up at seven every morning.

  2. But today she didn't get up until eight, because she went to bed too late last night.

  3. She had no time for breakfast, so she got dressed and ran out the door.

  4. The bus was crowded; she stood for thirty minutes.

  5. When she got to the company, she found her phone was not in her bag.

  6. The phone was still on the table at home!

  7. She called a colleague and asked her for help.

  8. The colleague laughed and said: no problem, I'll call for you with my phone.

  9. Wang Fang thought: tomorrow I must go to bed earlier.

  10. And so a busy day began.

Grammar notes

  • 因为 A,所以 B / A,因为 B

    因为 introduces the reason. In spoken Chinese the reason clause can follow the result, as in this article: 她八点才起床,因为…

    她八点才起床,因为她睡得太晚了。She got up at eight because she slept too late.

  • 才 (cái) — later than expected

    才 before a verb marks that something happened late or only after a condition. Compare 就 (earlier than expected).

    今天她八点才起床。Today she didn't get up until eight.

  • V + 了 — completed action

    了 after a verb marks completion. With a duration, 了 goes between verb and duration: 站了三十分钟.

    她站了三十分钟。She stood for thirty minutes.
